This year, Team Member Nancy Shelley was nominated for the LeadingAge PA Staff Member of the Year Award, a well-deserved recognition of her extraordinary 47 years of service. While she was not selected as the final recipient, we are incredibly proud to celebrate this honor and the lasting impact she continues to make every day.

CEO, Sue Verdegem presents Nancy Shelley with a certificate for her nomination.

Nancy’s journey with United Zion began in 1979 in Culinary Services, where her love for cooking and baking quickly made her a valued member of the team. After more than two decades in the kitchen, she transitioned to the Welcome Center, where she has served as the friendly, familiar face greeting residents, families, and visitors for the past 22 years.

Nancy brings our core values: Compassion, Integrity, Community, Stewardship, Excellence, and Respect to life in a way that feels both natural and genuine. Her ability to connect with others is unmatched. Whether she’s welcoming a new family, offering a listening ear to a resident, or helping a fellow team member, Nancy creates a sense of belonging for everyone she meets and interacts with.

It’s not uncommon for former residents and families to return to campus and make a point to stop by the front desk just to see Nancy. Those lasting relationships speak volumes about the care and kindness she shows to each person who walks through our doors.

Beyond her role, Nancy is also known as a mentor and trusted resource for her colleagues. So much so that “just ask Nancy” is a phrase heard often among team members. Her dedication has even extended through challenging moments, including staying overnight during severe weather to ensure the community remained supported.

Outside of work, Nancy shares her creativity as an artist, displaying her artwork in our gallery and bringing even more joy to those around her.

Nancy’s nomination reflects what we already know: her work is meaningful, her impact is lasting, and her presence is deeply valued. While awards are a wonderful recognition, it’s the daily difference she makes in the lives of others that truly sets her apart.

Nancy, thank you for your incredible 47 years of service and for continuing to make United Zion such a special place to call home.
