On October 15th, United Zion Retirement Community announced their plans to build a new independent residential living apartment building on their campus. This new building will be located near their current main building along Furnace Hills Pike (Route 501). It is expected to have around 47 new apartments as well as new common space for campus residents.
There is a growing demand in Lancaster County for senior living. Right now, United Zion has a waitlist of over two years for their current independent residential living residences. United Zion is focused on being a close-knit, reasonably priced continuing care retirement community. The new apartment building will include two-bedroom apartments and one-bedroom plus den apartments as well as one-bedroom apartments. These new apartments will also be larger than the current apartments, ranging from 700 – 1,100 square feet. The new building will possess new common spaces including a larger fitness center, fresh dining options, and additional gathering areas.
Final building design and layouts will be available this winter. Applications are currently being accepted for these new units and reservations will start spring of 2023. Groundbreaking for the building will be in the fall of 2023, and residents will be looking to move in the spring of 2025. United Zion is excited to open this building as part of its 120th anniversary celebration.

We see this as a much-needed project for the Lancaster County community as well as a chance to enhance the active and engaging lifestyle for the campus’s residents. We are exploring technology that can help assist residents enjoy campus life and extend their ability to age in place. As we look at ways to contain future cost to ensure reasonable rates for residents, we are evaluating sustainable technology to address future needs such as energy, maintenance and water. To assist with raising the funds needed, United Zion has started a capital campaign to help with technology, sustainability and common spaces.”
